Omialj, one of the oldest settlement on the island, is situated on the cliffs 90 m above the sea.
Although Omialj is mentioned in the XII. century as "Castri musculi" (from the Latin "Ad musculi" – the place of shells), it has prehistoric foundations.
Its evolution can be followed from the Liburnian and Roman times over the Krk princes Frankopans to the present times.
Since the eleventh century, Omialj has been an important centre of literacy and Glagoliticism. The first written monuments have their origins in the twelfth century.
Omialj is located in the north-western part of the island of Krk, in the area where the island is closest to the land. On a steep cliff dominates the surrounding area of the bay of Kvarner.
Today's Omialj, thanks to the its climate, vicinity of the bridge, the airport and the town of Rijeka, combines very wisely the tourist trade and the industry into it's economy.
