Makarska is one of the most famous tourist locations along the Croatian coast with its cobbled Dalmatian streets, countless sandy beaches, pine trees, crystal clear water and peaceful bays.
The imposing Biokovo mountain is towering above the town providing dramatic setting to this extraordinary town.
Makarska is tucked in a natural harbour fringed with the green peninsulas of Osejava and St.Peter, at the very bottom of the impressive Biokovo mountain.
The town was a Roman settlement just on the fringe of the Roman Empire and, at different times, was under the rule of the Turks, the Venetians and the Austrians.

One of the main sights in the town is the Franciscan monastery (built in 1614), a Malacological museum which apparently has the largest collection of snails, shells and mussels in the world and, on the main square, the Parish Church of St. Mark (built in 1776).

There are daily excursions to the islands of Hvar, Brac and Korcula.
